The campaign to overturn the state’s controversial “union busting” law has now cleared signature thresholds in one third of the required number of Utah state Senate districts.
Updated totals released Thursday morning show that five state Senate districts have hit signature targets. Utah law requires verified signatures from 8% of registered voters in at least 15 of the state’s 29 Senate districts.
Four of the five districts that have reached the required number of signatures mostly cover Salt Lake County. The other, SD8, is split between Salt Lake and Davis Counties.
Four of the districts that have reached their targets are in Salt Lake County. A fifth district straddling Salt Lake and Davis Counties (SD8) has also crossed the threshold.
Three more Senate districts crossed the halfway mark on Thursday:
- SD11
- SD3
- SD4
In total, 18 districts have now reached at least 50% of their required signatures with seven of them at 75% or more. Overall, the referendum effort has 100,236 verified signatures, which is just over 71% of the statewide goal of 140,748.
Protect Utah Workers, the coalition of union organizations behind the referendum effort, submitted petitions with more than 340,000 signatures. Election officials have until May 7 to complete the verification process.
