Sen. Mike Lee and Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan want answers from Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan about her recent appearances at events with Democratic candidates for Congress, which they say may have violated laws prohibiting political activities by federal employees.
On Monday, Lee and Jordan sent a letter to Khan raising questions about her travel to events in Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin and Arizona where she appeared with Democratic candidates.
"These campaign-style events create the appearance you are using your official position to advocate for the election of certain Democratic candidates," the letter reads.
The letter demands that Khan turn over documents and communications related to the scheduling and funding for her travel to the events by Nov. 4, the day before the election.
Lee and Jordan have oversight over the FTC. Jordan is the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and Lee is the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Competition Policy, Antitrust, and Consumer Rights.
Lee has been a frequent critic of Kahn.
- Lee criticized her lack of experience and her progressive politics when she was first nominated by President Joe Biden in 2021. At 32, Kahn was the youngest ever FTC head.
"Being less than four years out of law school, she lacks the experience necessary for such an important role as FTC Commissioner," Lee said. - Shortly after her confirmation, Lee was critical of Kahn's attempts to overhaul the FTC. In July 2021, Lee expressed concern about her perceived moves to diminish the roles of the Republican commissioners.
"The unifying theme of these developments is a progressive putsch to consolidate power and burden American businesses," Lee said in a press release.
