Utah joins with other states to support Trump's push to end birthright citizenship

Utah is siding with Donald Trump's executive order challenging birthright citizenship. The Trump administration is challenging the 14th Amendment's guarantee of citizenship to those born on U.S. soil.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Trump's executive order, which denies citizenship to children born to parents who are in the country illegally. It also blocks U.S. agencies from issuing citizenship documents for those children. The judge called Trump's order "blatantly unconstitutional."

On Monday, Utah Attorney General Derek Brown joined 17 other Republican attorneys general in an amicus brief supporting Trump's order. The court filing, led by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird, claims that 7% of births in 2023 were to illegal immigrants.

"The lure of American citizenship motivates pregnant women to travel to America to give birth," the brief reads.

The brief goes on to say the costs to states associated with illegal immigration is more than $115 billion annually.

The temporary restraining order blocking Trump's executive order is scheduled to expire this week. The judge has scheduled a hearing on Thursday morning on whether to issue a preliminary injunction in the case.

There are hearings scheduled in two other federal cases challenging Trump's executive order this week.
